Gums matter! How we keep them in top shape with proactive, gum disease-fighting care
Gum disease is a real threat to your smile’s beauty and overall health and well-being. Chronic inflammation and infection of the gums that surround and support the teeth, gum disease, is the primary cause of 70% of adult tooth loss. It will affect three out of every four people. The good news is that the many distressing side effects and complications of gum disease can be avoided by partnering with the kind and highly qualified team at the office of Stephen Huber, DDS, in Leawood, Kansas.
What causes gum disease?
Also known as periodontal disease, gum disease is primarily caused by bacterial plaque – a sticky, colorless film that continuously forms on the teeth. If plaque is not diligently removed through meticulous brushing and flossing daily, it transforms into a rough and porous material known as calculus or tartar. The bacteria in the plaque then release destructive toxins, which irritate the gums. Without proper treatment, these toxins can eventually cause the breakdown of the fibers that hold the gums tightly to the teeth. This process results in the formation of periodontal pockets. These spaces between the teeth and gums contribute to a vicious cycle; they fill with even more bacteria and toxins. Advanced disease is characterized by deep pockets and the movement of the bacteria into the jawbone. At this stage, the tooth will either fall out or require extraction due to the breakdown of supportive bony tissue in the jaw.
Are there any warning signs?
Sometimes! The trouble with oral diseases is that often, by the time you notice any concerning changes, the disease will have already caused damage. If symptoms are present, they include puffier and redder-than-normal gums and blood on your toothbrush or floss. As the disease worsens, you may notice changes in how your teeth fit together when your mouth is closed or how your dentures and other oral appliances fit. While patients are advised to check for the warning signs, there might not be any discomfort until the disease has spread to a point where the tooth is unsalvageable. That is why we encourage you and your family members to maintain regular visits for exams and cleanings.
How do these visits help to keep my gums healthy?
The exam portion of the visit is all about catching any problems with the gums early before you even know issues are present! At that point, damage may not have been done, or we can catch and resolve the early-stage disease (gingivitis or gum inflammation) before it progresses to full-blown gum infection or periodontitis (advanced gum disease). The cleaning portion of the visit involves our hygienists using their considerable skill and special tools to remove stubborn tartar.
Of course, as true partners in your oral health, we work with you to support the most effective brushing and flossing techniques. We can also recommend oral care products and other preventative services to keep those gums in top shape.
