The best defense is a good offense: The power of preventative oral cancer screenings

Cancers of the mouth are, unfortunately, common. The Oral Cancer Foundation reports that more than 53,000 Americans are diagnosed with this type of cancer every year. At the office of Stephen Huber, DDS in Leawood, Kansas, we understand it does not have to be this way. Such cancers can be avoided with appropriate management of your unique risks. And, even when certain risks are not “modifiable” and cannot be altered, we can identify and address pre-cancers and cancers early, when they are easier to treat successfully.

How do you identify cancers?

During regular oral cancer screenings. Dr. Huber examines the lips, tongue, cheeks, throat, floor of the mouth, sinuses, and the hard and soft palate for potential anomalies or areas of concern. He also palpates or feels by touch for potential masses and other concerning changes to the tissues of the mouth and neck.

What are some trouble signs?

Just because you have new discoloration, sores, and swelling does not mean you have cancer. We don’t want to be alarmist. That said, if you are concerned about any changes since your last visit, it is essential to tell us about them. This includes unexplained bleeding, sores that never seem to heal, the feeling that there is something “stuck” in your throat, radiating ear pain, numbness, and difficulty swallowing. During your screening, Dr. Huber also looks for potential trouble signs, like red or white patches and lumps, bumps, or rough spots.

How can I prevent oral cancer?

You can reduce the risk factors for developing the disease. Dr. Huber will identify these potential risks during a consultation. As needed, we will work with you and direct you toward good resources to support your smoking cessation efforts. The use of tobacco-containing products and alcohol plays an outsized role in the development of these cancers. In general, many behaviors and habits that support a healthy body also support a healthy mouth and oral cancer prevention. These lifestyle characteristics include:

  • Not smoking.
  • Maintaining a healthy, nutritious, and varied diet.
  • Keeping up with good oral care at home and our office in Leawood, Kansas.

How often should I be screened?

The Stephen Huber, DDS team works with you to determine the best schedule for your needs and to account for any existing risk factors. Generally, we screen during regular check-ups, scheduled once every six months. However, you may need more frequent check-ups. So we can avoid the many serious complications associated with oral cancers. If you are due for a check-up, call (913) 349-9795 today to schedule your visit. The best time to see you is always before you notice any alarming changes to your mouth’s function, appearance, and feel. We strive to keep your mouth healthy, not playing “catch-up.” The best defense is always a good offense.
