Unlocking your best health and smile with proactive, high-quality dental care

At Stephen Huber, DDS, we strive to provide quality oral care that supports the total health of the whole family in Leawood, Kansas. No provider of high-quality oral healthcare would be complete without a comprehensive range of services to safeguard the teeth, gums, and mouth against diseases. Such preventive dental care is fundamental to our approaches and is generally associated with a better experience and far less trauma to the mouth (and body). It is a healthier alternative to restorative dental care and also better for your finances!

But what if I already take good care of my teeth and gums at home?

We are happy to hear that you are so diligent about brushing and flossing! It is essential to be consistent and thorough about caring for your gums, teeth, and other areas of your mouth at home. However, there is no substitute for professional care. Plaque is constantly forming on the teeth. Even those with the best brushing and flossing techniques cannot possibly remove all plaque. When it remains and then hardens, this stubborn tartar can only be removed with the use of professional tools and expertise, such as that of our hygiene team.

OK, so how often should I visit the dentist?

It is generally recommended to have professional cleanings and exams by Dr. Huber at least once every six months or twice per year. This is the bare minimum for patients who are otherwise healthy and who have no additional or heightened risk of oral disease, from mouth and throat cancers to gum disease.

What are “risk factors”?

The risks generally are specific to the particular threat to the health of your mouth and the “rest of you.” However, many systemic health threats can also pose risks to the oral cavity, including the teeth, gums, and facial and jaw structures. These risks include smoking and the use of products containing tobacco or nicotine, poor nutrition, and inconsistent or inadequate oral care. Since the mouth does not exist in isolation from the rest of the body, getting any systemic diseases under control is also essential. For instance, diabetics who manage their blood sugar levels well also help to promote healthy teeth and gums. Poorly controlled diabetics are at increased risk of developing oral infections and experiencing poor wound healing.

Will the cleaning at your office hurt?

No! Cleaning your teeth and gumline should not hurt at all. Our hygienists use a gentle and skilled hand to remove surface stains, bacteria, plaque, and tartar. They also use tools associated with a much more comfortable and efficient dental experience, such as ultrasonic scalers. We have invested in an array of technologies, all with an eye on supporting the most pleasant and painless experience at our office.

What if you find something wrong?

The specific “intervention” depends on what Dr. Huber finds during an exam/check-up. These interventions could range from something as simple as applying fluoride or dental sealants to vulnerable teeth. Or, we may need to discuss restorative care, such as periodontal therapies, fillings, or crowns. The office of Stephen Huber, DDS, emphasizes conservative dentistry. We prioritize preserving as much healthy tooth structure and tissues as possible, knowing that these lighter-touch approaches are generally associated with longer-lasting treatments and overall better patient satisfaction as they mimic natural aesthetics, structure, and function.
