A better dental cleaning: An introduction to Prophy Jet-assisted professional cleanings in 5 FAQs
At the office of Stephen Huber, DDS, we always strive to improve the dental experience at our office in Leawood, Kansas. One of the ways we are supporting a better experience is through Prophy Jet technology.
What do you mean by “prophy”?
Prophy refers to “prophylaxis,” which is just the medical term for dental cleaning. Since most patients likely spend the bulk of their time at the dentist’s office in cleanings or undergoing exams, we need to make these routine visits as comfortable as possible. That means using special technologies as better alternatives to traditional methods of cleaning the teeth, gums, and other parts of the mouth.
How have dentists traditionally cleaned the teeth?
Dentists and hygienists typically use instruments, techniques, and tools to contact the teeth to remove stains and other deposits. These deposits can contribute to developing dental diseases, such as decay. Additionally, special pastes may be used to remove stubborn plaque build-up, tartar, and stains. These pastes use abrasion to scrape or wear off the destructive, disease-causing substances. Some aspects of the traditional cleaning process can be quite triggering for patients with dental fear or anxiety.
What do you mean by “triggering” or triggers for dental fear?
Dr. Huber tries to avoid common triggers for dental apprehension and fear at our office. These triggers include the sound of the drill and associated vibrations or sensations. The systems conventionally used for dental prophies generate drill-like noises, which can be quite unsettling for individuals with long-standing dental fears. Using the Prophy Jet, we avoid or minimize these triggers.
How is the Prophy Jet different?
Prophy Jet doesn’t use rotating and noisy tools to remove stains, bacteria, plaque, and tartar. Instead, this system uses air, powder, and water to cleanse and polish the teeth gently yet thoroughly. No tools come in direct contact with the teeth, which makes this a light-touch and non-invasive option for all sorts of patients – including those with dentistry-related anxieties. There is also no need for abrasive pastes to scrape away all of the “bad stuff.” The Prophy Jet accomplishes this essential step in cleaning, but only with a high-powered stream of water and a sodium or non-sodium powder that lifts discoloration and bacterial film from the teeth. Plus, you can truly enjoy that minty-fresh taste and feel that comes with good polishing without the sticky, unpleasant, and gritty sensation of traditional pastes.
Is the Prophy Jet as effective?
It’s more effective! This technology is engineered to be a more powerful alternative to traditional polishers. We can remove more in less time, which adds to patient convenience and satisfaction and supports what is most important to us—keeping your mouth healthy and your smile looking great.
